Visiting Artist: Ravenscroft School

In the last week of March, I was a visiting artist at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, North Carolina. I collaborated with arts educator Erin Ryan Stelling and her two Photography classes, along with the Advanced Placement Photography class (mostly juniors and seniors) to create a twenty-foot-long accordion book. Each student made one page in the book, which centered on self-portraiture and was titled Inside / Outside. The “inside” reflected how the students saw themselves, while the “outside” explored how they felt others perceived them. Using their own photographs along with text, paint, thread, and other materials, each student approached the challenge with creativity and commitment! On Tuesday, we took a field trip to Chapel Hill to view the exhibition and explore the photography collection and book library at Cassilhaus, founded by the extraordinary Ellen Cassilly and Frank Konhaus. What a week!

Visual artist Elizabeth Stone's work explores perception and time by combining her study of photography and drawing with biology. The duality of art and science is a strong influence when considering her own place in the world and the marks that she makes.
